Sweden Russia Preview: Russia look to end first round disapointment

June 17th, 2008 | By: Nick | 8 Comments »

Hello to all fans enjoying Euro 2008. I just wanted to share my thounghts on the Sweden Russia match tomorrow.

If your a Russia fan, I’m sure you know that Russia does not have a good record at major tournaments in the post-Soviet era. Russia qualifyed for Euro 96, Euro 2004, World Cup 1994, World Cup 2002, and exited in the first round every time.

I think that tomorrow, Russia has a chance to change that. With master tactician Guus Hiddink in charge, I believe that he can engineer a victory over Sweden. It all depends on how the back line holds up agianst a Swedish attack led by Zlatan. I think its time to get Igashevich and the Berezustki twins back in the starting line up. Zhirkov should definately return to the midfield as his accurate crosses will help service the strikers.

Having seen Sweden’s performance in the first two games, I believe that this will be no walk in the park for Russia. I hope Russia take this game with confidence and concentration.

This is all I have to say, I’d like to hear your comments.

For me, Russia should start with the same line-up as with Greece, maybe Arshavin for Bilaletdynov, as he is exelent finisher and can create a goal out of nothing. But it depends on what is Arshavin like now, not playing for quite a long time. Anyway, if Russia play with the same attitude as with Greece I will be happy as this will be entertaining football. Also hoping for more luck with russian finishing :) )

Thank you for your blog!

Does it really matter if Russia advances or not. If they do they will have to face the Dutch anyway and that my friends can go only one way.

Cheers!

I have never seen such a football skills our football team has now. It’s incredible! After winning the World Hokkey Championship in Canada ( after a 15 years delay, winning our main hokkey enemy), nothing is can be incredible for Russia. We are in the Euro 2008 play-off with 20 years delay, now it’s time to shake it up! Moscow and the whole country celebrating today’s win over the Sweden team!

So Russia has indeed made it into the quarterfinal stage, and no one has expected this. From before this tournament all people says that Russia will be bottom of the group, but it has beat Greece (which was surprise) and Sweden (which was even more suprise, to everyone!). So perhaps now not everyone can see how Russia can be the Netherlands, but if it happens if will surely be the greatest surprise in European Cup history (i think).
