SWE 0-2 RUS: HISTORY IS MADE IN RUSSIAN FOOTBALL
History was made today in Russian football. For the first time since 1988, Russia have made to the knockout stages. Goals from Pavlyuchenko and Arshavin ended Russia’s major tournament disapointment.
I felt that the Russians played really well in attack especially with Arshavin who played on both flanks to service the strikers. Zhirkov did a very good job as a defender and as an attacking midfielder by assisting Arshavin. Ignashevich and Kolodin did well to cover Ibrahim and Larsson which slowed the Swedish attack down. And last but not least Akinfeev pulled off some fine saves to keep the Russians alive.
To note, I think Sweden did not look inspired enough which led to their bad marking of Arshavin. I think that their midfield gave the ball up too much and did not handle the counter attacks well. I will however praise Andreas Isaksson for saving very dengerous shots.
I am looking forward to your thoughts and comments.

Great attacking football from Russia today. It was nice watching them play. They should have scored more goals, though. So many chances for them.

I attended a game against Spain, needless to say I was dissapointed with our defense, although I felt our midfield and forwards did well. The game against Greece was a “moment of truth” as Hiddink called it and we passed that test. Yesterday, was world class football, honestly I thought this was a much better victory then the one against England last fall. We dominated against much more experienced and higher ranked team. No matter what happens on Saturday, Russians have every reasont to be proud of their teams performance.

i’ve been a fan of our team for quite a long time but i’ve never seen it play such thoughtful, organized and attacking! football…really well-done!!! …and Hiddink is a real miracle-maker))))
