Russia to bid for 2018 World Cup

Russian Sports Minister and Football Union president Vitaly Mutko announced that Russia will bid on the 2018 World Cup. He said of matter:

”In the near future we are set to make our first move and ask FIFA for all the necessary documents to prepare a bid for the right to host the 2018 World Cup.

”This issue is very complicated and demands a big investment. But we will definitely make the first step of submitting an application.”

Russia will face stiffest competition with Europe will come from England as well as a joint bid by Portugal and Spain with bids also expected from China, Qatar, Japan and Australia. The initial expression of interest is due by February 2 with the formal application on March 16. FIFA’s final decision won’t come till December 2010.
