RUS 1-0 MKD: Russia Top Group B

Coupled by a 0-0 draw between the Republic of Ireland and Slovakia in Dublin, Russia have once again taken the top spot in Group B after a victory over Macedonia in Moscow today. These two results set the tone for the encounter with Ireland on Tuesday and puts Russia into a very strong position to win Group B.

Russia
Russia came into this match knowing that a victory would carry them into first place ahead of the encounter with Ireland. Advocaat lined his men up in a similar 4-2-3-1 formation which defeated Serbia just three weeks ago. The back line which consisted of Ignashevich and Berezutski flanked by Zhirkov and Anyukov, performed well and were able to close down some of the Macedonian attacks but were stretched during the first twenty minutes of the game. Macedonia were able to create several dangerous moments from close range and corner kicks in the first 15-20 minutes of the first half. Zhirkov also did well to dominate the left flank and provide support for the midfield. The five man midfield did very well in keeping possession and bring the ball forward. Shirokov and Denisov did well to control the center of the pitch and occupy the Macedonian gaps. Semshov who was flanked by Arshavin and Zyrianov played very well in counterattacking. Up front, Kerzhakov was a dangerous presence but his performance was substandard. He missed a few good opportunities to extend the lead and could have been substituted earlier. Additionally, the decision to bring off Semshov was strange as he was instrumental in the attacking midfield.

Macedonia
To say a few words, Macedonia clearly had determination to make the most of this match. New manager John Toshack has clearly made an impression in only his second game in charge. Macedonia were able to hold Russia level for 40 minutes and keep the score at 0-1 for the rest of game when Russia clearly dominated the second half.
