MKD 0-1 RUS: Russia Take Control of Group B

Russia defeated Macedonia yesterday 1-0 (my prediction botched again) in Skopje. This victory combined with the 1-1 draw between Slovakia and Ireland in Žilina, puts Russia at the top of Group B with nine points. Ireland, Armenia, Slovakia trail just below with seven points. Russia started the game well but I think the second half clearly showed some deficiencies in Advocaat’s line up and formation.

Russia started the game very strongly and were rewarded with a goal from Aleksandr Kerzhakov. For the rest of the first half Russia steadily maintained more of the possession with Macedonia sporadically threatening. The second half was a whole different story. Russia clearly lost the battle on the flanks by allowing the Macedonian fullbacks and wingers to dominate the wings. Advocaat’s 4-2-3-1 formation broke down in the center as well. The defensive midfielders Shriokov and Denisov allowed the ball to get behind them allowing for Macedonia to attack dangerously. On the other hand Ignashevich did well to cover their mistakes by consistently clearing the ball out of the area, leading to more corner kicks for Macedonia. From this break down, Russia barley mounted an attack or counter attack during the second half. I think Advocaat clearly needs to make some player and positional changes in order to patch up the flaws seen in yesterdays game.
Macedonia
Although I don’t fully remember either of the Macedonia-Russia games from the UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying campaign, Russia did defeat them comfortably 2-0 and 3-0. Macedonia clearly was able to attack and threaten Russia more this time. The Macedonian wingers and fullbacks did well to occupy the flanks to deliver aerial passes and crosses.
Thats all I have to say for now. I will do a more in-depth analysis post on Advocaat’s formation in the next couple of weeks. I encourage and look forward to reading your comments.
